He's actually loaded a blank cartridge into the chamber and she can't tell the difference, so when the gun detonates she cries out that she's killed her lawyer. That makes Petrocelli believe that maybe she didn't kill anyone. Some snooping around the San Remo, Arizona (actually Tucson) police department reveals that the dead man was an undercover cop -- giving somebody plenty of motive to murder him beforehand and dump his corpse in the young woman's lap!
